Watch the Daytona 500 & Learn About Voice???

DaytonaFieldSignWatching the Daytona 500 is probably not something you’d normally do to learn about vocal use, right?  But you might be surprised.

I often ask clients to watch a NASCAR race to hear what good vocal projection sounds like.  When a pit reporter has to speak over the roar of 40+ car engines going 200 m.p.h., you can bet they need to use excellent vocal projection, and most of them do!

Vocal projection is how far the sound you create travels when it leaves your mouth.  It’s quite different from volume.  You can think of projection as being a laser beam and volume the beam of a flashlight.  One is tight and focused while one is diffused.

How do you project your voice well? I did a video for the International Journalism Network that explains vocal projection. Take a couple of minutes to watch so you can use your voice effectively when you’re facing noisy conditions. And for more on projection, read this earlier blog post.

Perfect! I love watching NASCAR so this won’t feel like homework at all! 🙂

I’m a big NASCAR fan, too. I’m really excited about Danica’s pole! It may not help her in the race, but at least she’s broken a barrier. Did you read that even Jeff Gordon’s daughter didn’t know women could drive in NASCAR!
